Be Careful What You Post on Social Media
- Never speak negatively about your cooperating teachers in a public forum; the band world is small and it will get back to them
- You are building your professional reputation; don't do anything to tarnish that
- You are now in the public eye; you are to be an example for your students. Photos of questionable behavior is not advised
- Students will look you up on every piece of media there is; they want to know about you but they don't need to know everything about you - such as your beverage of choice
- Go through all of your social media accounts and clean them up
- Google yourself and see what you find; that is the first thing your students will do
Interviewing for Jobs
- Interviews are sometimes more about character than ability
- There is a little test called Kenexa that most districts are using to pre-screen potential candidates
- This test evaluates Achievement Orientation
- Dependability
- Energy
- Initiative
- Multitasking
- Optimism
- Team Orientation
- Situational Judgement
- I don't know the validity of the test, but I do know that districts put a lot of stock into it. It could keep a great candidate from even getting an interview
- One of the first things a prospective employer will do is look at your social media presence; again, clean it up.
Be Responsible
- Take care of your business both professional and personal
- Be that person we can't live without
- Make them want to offer you a job when you are finished student teaching
- Be a self-starter
Be Dependable
- To the best of your ability, be on time, be present, follow through with tasks assigned
- Do everything at the highest level
- Be a contributing team memeber
Be Loyal
- To your staff
- To your students
- To the institution to which you are assinged
No one, including me, ever does great things. But together, we can do small things, with great love, and together we can do something wonderful. ~ Mother Teresa
